Phase 1 - Tuning into sounds activities
Phase 1 is usually covered in nursery and early reception, although some children may benefit from more practice with this. Phase 1 involves seven aspects of sound: environmental (noises children can hear around them), instrumental, body sounds, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, voice sounds and oral blending and segmenting (c-a-t= cat!).
Below are some videos and resources to support this at home.
Set 1 phonics sounds
These are the first sounds that children learn. Watch the videos to see how the sounds are taught and how children are supported to read and write containing the sounds they have already learnt.
Please note that the sounds are taught in the order below.
Special friends
When children are confident with the single letter sounds, we teach them the set 1 special friends sounds. Special friends are two letters that make one sound e.g. qu, sh, th, ch, nk, ng.
Holding a sentence
In reception we are building children's independence for writing by trying to get them to sound out sentences themselves. Use these videos to practice some sentence writing at home!
