History of Leatherhead Trinity School and Nursery

In July 1877, the future All Saints’ School opened in a disused engine-house, which was being used as a Mission Church and Sunday School. As the school grew, a decision was made to raise funds for a new building. By this time, it was known as All Saints’ School. The new building was formally opened on 25th April 1900, and the school remained there for three-quarters of a century. That building now serves as the North Leatherhead Community Association Centre.

In June 1926, All Saints’ School transitioned to a Junior and Infants’ School. However, the rapid population growth in the Kingston Road area soon made it impossible for the school to accommodate all its pupils. For a time, All Saints’ Church Hall was repurposed as a classroom to help manage the overflow.

By 1st September 1953, All Saints’ Junior School was again bursting at the seams. To address this, the school was restructured, becoming solely an Infants’ School. Meanwhile, the Junior School relocated to the smaller of two former County Secondary School buildings on the Kingston Road/Woodville Road site. This shuffle was made possible by the development of Therfield School on Dilston Road, which relieved some of the pressure on school sites.

In 1976, All Saints’ moved to new buildings on Aperdele Road, marking a new chapter in its history.

In 1993, Surrey was among the last Education Authorities to implement the Plowden Report’s recommendations on First and Middle Schools, and similarly late in reverting the age of transfer to 7 and 11. Consequently, Woodville became The Woodville School, a Surrey County Junior School. Facing a reduction in numbers due to these changes, All Saints’ responded by establishing a Nursery School, which came under Surrey County Council control in September 1998. This Nursery now provides Early Years education for children aged 3 to 4, offering five sessions each week.

In March 2005, the Surrey School Organisation Committee approved a significant reorganisation: the closure of St Mary’s Infant School, All Saints Infant School, and The Woodville Junior School to create a single, all-through primary school and Children’s Centre in Leatherhead. This new model aimed to minimise disruption for children up to age 11, eliminating the need to transfer between different schools and sites at age 7, and allowing pupils to remain with their friends and peers throughout their early education.

The establishment of the all-through school model enabled staff to develop a deep understanding of each child’s individual needs and abilities from the very start of their statutory education. This continuity allowed Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 staff to collaborate closely, ensuring that learning in the early years was effectively built upon as children progressed.

Leatherhead Trinity School was officially opened by HRH the Duke of Kent on 25 November 2010, marking a significant milestone in the school’s history.

In September 2018, the Nursery provision was relocated from the Children’s Centre to the main school site on Woodville Road, further integrating early years education within the school community.

However, in August 2019, following a Surrey-wide restructure of Children’s Centres, Leatherhead Trinity Children’s Centre was sadly closed. The Family Centre serving the Leatherhead area is now Dorking Nursery School & Children’s Centre.

To reflect the nursery provision within the school, the name was officially changed in May 2020 to Leatherhead Trinity School and Nursery.
