Safer Internet Day 2026 – Smart Tech, Safe Choices
Our school will be recognising Safer Internet Day 2026 (10th February), joining thousands of schools across the UK to celebrate the world’s largest online safety campaign. This year’s theme — Smart tech, safe choices: Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI — encourages children to think carefully about how they use AI tools and how these tools may influence their online experiences.
AI now forms part of daily life for many children, through voice assistants, chatbots, recommended videos and games. The national Safer Internet Day teaching resources for ages 3–11 focus on helping children understand what AI can do, where it has limitations, and how to make safe and sensible choices when using technology.
What We’re Focusing on in School
Throughout the week, every class will take part in short, age‑appropriate discussions and activities. Our key messages for pupils are:
EYFS (Ages 3–5)
“If something online makes you unsure, stop and tell a grown‑up.”
This helps our youngest children develop simple habits for staying safe online.
KS1 (Ages 5–7)
“Use your tech safely: ask an adult if something looks wrong or feels strange.”
Children learn that computers and voice assistants don’t always get things right, and they should seek help if unsure.
KS2 (Ages 7–11)
“Think before you click: AI can be helpful, but it’s not always right — make smart, safe choices.”
Older pupils explore how AI works, its limitations, and how to check whether information online is reliable.
How Families Can Get Involved
We encourage you to continue the conversation about AI and online safety at home. You may wish to explore:
- The UK Safer Internet Centre’s interactive quizzes, which you can complete with your child.
- Their top tips for parents and carers, offering practical guidance on supporting children online.
- The top tips for children and young people, written in child‑friendly language to help them stay safe independently.
Talking regularly about online experiences — what children watch, play, read or use — is one of the best ways to keep them safe.
If You Need Support
If you have any questions or concerns about online safety, please speak to your child’s class teacher. Together, we can help every child make smart tech, safe choices throughout the year.
