Starting Reception in September 2026

We’re delighted to be welcoming our new Reception pupils and families to Leatherhead Trinity School and Nursery in September 2026.

Starting school is an important milestone, and we pride ourselves on offering children a warm, supportive and engaging start to their learning journey. Our Early Years team works closely with families to ensure children settle quickly, feel secure, and develop confidence from day one.

What families value about Leatherhead Trinity

Parents consistently tell us they value:

  • A nurturing and inclusive Early Years environment
  • A broad and enriching curriculum, including music, languages, creative arts, science and outdoor learning
  • OPAL play, supporting creativity, independence and wellbeing
  • Strong pastoral care and safeguarding
  • Close links with our three churches, underpinning a caring, values‑led community
  • A coaching culture that supports staff to deliver high‑quality teaching every day

We place a strong emphasis on early language development, phonics and reading fluency, ensuring children build secure foundations that support learning across the curriculum.

Wraparound care from Reception
Breakfast and after‑school care are available from Reception onwards and are run by familiar school staff, providing calm, supportive care around the school day.

What to Expect in the First Weeks of Reception

Starting school is an exciting milestone, and we understand that the first few weeks are just as important for families as they are for children. At Leatherhead Trinity, we take great care to ensure that every child feels welcome, secure and confident from their very first days in Reception.

A gentle and supported start

Children are introduced to school routines gradually, with plenty of time to explore the classroom, outdoor areas and meet familiar adults. The first weeks focus on helping children feel settled, happy and comfortable, building confidence at their own pace.

Building routines and relationships

Clear, consistent routines help children feel safe and confident. Through play, stories and shared experiences, children begin to understand the school day while forming strong relationships with staff and classmates.

Learning through play and exploration

In the early weeks, learning is rooted in play‑based activities that promote curiosity, language development and social skills. Children enjoy a balance of adult‑led learning and child‑initiated play, both indoors and outdoors.

Focus on communication, language and early reading

We gently introduce phonics and early reading experiences through songs, stories and games. This helps children begin to develop key skills while keeping learning enjoyable and meaningful.

Close communication with families

We know parents want to feel informed and reassured. Staff are always available to talk through how children are settling, and we share information regularly so families feel confident and involved from the very beginning.

How We Support Settling‑In

Every child is unique, and settling into school can look different for each child. At Leatherhead Trinity, we take a flexible, nurturing approach to ensure children feel supported emotionally, socially and academically.

Strong relationships from day one

Our Early Years team prioritises getting to know every child quickly — their interests, strengths and needs. Trusted relationships with familiar adults help children feel secure and ready to explore their new environment.

Calm, nurturing environments

Reception classrooms are carefully organised to feel welcoming and purposeful, with quiet spaces, creative areas and outdoor learning opportunities. Children are encouraged to explore confidently, knowing support is always close by.

Partnering with families

We work closely with parents and carers to support a smooth transition into school. Sharing information before and during the first weeks helps us respond sensitively to individual needs and ensures consistency between home and school.

Supporting emotional wellbeing

We recognise that feelings can change during a new transition. Staff are attentive to children’s emotional needs, offering reassurance, encouragement and calm support whenever it’s needed.

Flexible approaches when needed

Some children settle very quickly, while others need a little more time. We adapt our routines and support to suit each child, ensuring that every child feels safe, valued and confident as they become part of school life.
