A day in the life at Nursery

We know that one of the best ways for families to feel confident about Nursery is to understand what a typical day looks like. While every day is shaped by the children’s interests and needs, Nursery at Leatherhead Trinity School and Nursery follows a calm, predictable rhythm that helps children feel secure, settled and ready to learn.

Arriving and settling in

The day begins with a warm welcome from familiar adults who greet children as they arrive. This unhurried start helps children feel reassured and ready for the day ahead. Children settle into the Nursery environment, choosing activities and reconnecting with friends while staff check in gently with each child.

Clear routines help children understand what to expect, building confidence and independence from the very beginning of the day.

Morning play and exploration

During the morning, children enjoy a wide range of play‑based learning activities, both indoors and outdoors. They are encouraged to explore, create and investigate in ways that reflect their interests.

Activities might include:

  • imaginative role play
  • construction and creative activities
  • mark‑making and early writing
  • story sharing and singing
  • puzzles and early problem‑solving

Adults join children in their play, extending language, supporting social skills and encouraging curiosity in a natural, meaningful way.

Outdoor learning

Outdoor learning is an important part of Nursery life. Children have regular access to outdoor spaces where they can move freely, explore and develop physical confidence.

Outdoor play supports:

  • physical development and coordination
  • collaboration and turn‑taking
  • imaginative and creative play
  • wellbeing and confidence

Being outdoors gives children opportunities to learn in different ways while enjoying fresh air and active movement.

Snack and social time

Snack times are relaxed and social moments in the day. Children sit together, practise independence skills and enjoy conversations with friends and adults. These times support social development, communication skills and healthy routines in a calm, positive way.

Story time and group learning

Gathering together for stories, songs and group activities helps children develop listening skills and a love of language. This is also when children are introduced gently to early phonics, rhymes and stories, supporting early communication and literacy skills.

Group times are kept short, engaging and interactive, helping children remain focused while feeling included and comfortable.

Lunch and rest opportunities

Where applicable, lunch is a relaxed part of the day, encouraging independence and social interaction. After lunch, children have opportunities for quieter activities, such as reading, puzzles or calm play, allowing them time to recharge.

Staff are always attentive to children’s needs, offering rest, reassurance or support where needed.

Afternoon play and reflection

The afternoon continues with a mix of play, exploration and adult‑guided activities. Children might revisit favourite activities or explore something new, building confidence and extending their learning.

Throughout the day, staff observe, support and celebrate each child’s progress, ensuring learning is meaningful and suited to their individual stage of development.

Preparing for home time

As the day comes to a close, children begin to wind down, reflecting on their experiences through conversation and stories. Familiar routines help children feel calm and ready to transition home, bringing the day to a gentle and positive end.

Supporting every child

Every child’s Nursery day looks slightly different, and our team adapts support to meet individual needs. Whether a child is full of confidence or needs a little more reassurance, staff work closely with families to ensure each child feels safe, happy and supported throughout the day.
