Our Nursery at Leatherhead Trinity School and Nursery provides a calm, caring and nurturing environment where young children are supported to feel safe, happy and confident from the very start. For many children, Nursery is their first experience of being part of a school community, and we take great care to ensure this step feels gentle, positive and reassuring.

Our experienced Early Years team builds strong relationships with every child and family, creating a welcoming space where children can explore, play and learn at their own pace. Through consistent routines, thoughtful support and close partnership with parents and carers, children develop confidence, independence and curiosity as they begin their learning journey.

A gentle introduction to learning and school life

Nursery is an important time for children to develop early social, communication and learning skills. Our approach is rooted in play, exploration and relationships, helping children feel secure while encouraging them to try new experiences.

Children are supported to:

  • build early language and communication skills
  • develop confidence and independence
  • learn to play, share and collaborate with others
  • explore the world through curiosity and imagination

Learning experiences are carefully planned to be engaging and age‑appropriate, supporting each child’s development in a calm and purposeful way.

A nurturing environment that supports wellbeing

Emotional wellbeing is at the heart of our Nursery provision. Staff take time to get to know each child as an individual, responding sensitively to their needs and offering reassurance and encouragement throughout the day.

The Nursery environment is thoughtfully organised to feel welcoming and secure, with clear routines that help children understand what to expect. Children are encouraged to explore confidently, knowing that familiar adults are always nearby to support them.

Learning through play indoors and outdoors

Play is central to learning in our Nursery. Children access a range of indoor and outdoor experiences that support physical development, communication, creativity and problem‑solving.

Through play‑based learning, children develop key skills such as:

  • listening and speaking
  • early mark‑making and fine motor skills
  • curiosity and concentration
  • confidence to explore new ideas

Outdoor learning provides valuable opportunities for movement, exploration and collaboration, helping children build resilience and independence while enjoying being active.

Working in partnership with families

We value the close relationships we build with families and believe that working together makes a real difference to children’s confidence and wellbeing. Regular communication helps families feel informed and reassured about how their child is settling and developing.

Parents and carers are encouraged to share information about their child, helping us to provide consistent, personalised support and to respond sensitively to each child’s needs.

From Nursery to Reception

For many children, Nursery at Leatherhead Trinity provides a strong foundation for the next step into Reception. Children benefit from becoming familiar with the school environment, routines and expectations in a gentle and age‑appropriate way.

Our Nursery and Reception teams work closely together, supporting children emotionally and socially as they prepare for the transition into school life. For children who later join Reception at Leatherhead Trinity, this continuity helps the move feel more familiar and reassuring.

A positive start that lasts

Our aim in Nursery is simple: for children to feel happy, confident and eager to learn. By providing a nurturing environment, supportive relationships and meaningful learning experiences, we help children develop the skills and confidence they need for future learning and for life beyond the Nursery.

Our Early Years Provision:

Here at Leatherhead Trinity, our Early Years Foundation Stage is based upon four principles:

  • A unique child – developing resilient, capable, confident and self-assured individuals.
  • Positive relationships – supporting the children in becoming strong and independent.
  • Enabling environments – where opportunities and experiences respond to the individual needs of the child by developing a strong partnership between practitioners, parents/carers and the child.
  • Learning and developing – An acknowledgement that children learn in different ways and at different rates.

Early Years at Our School: Nurturing the Whole Child

At our school, we believe early learning is a dynamic journey shaped by meaningful interaction, purposeful play, and nurturing relationships. Guided by the Revised Early Years Foundation Stage (2012), our curriculum fosters confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

We provide a safe, secure, and stimulating environment where each child is valued as an individual. Through hands-on experiences and thoughtful guidance from dedicated adults, children build self-esteem, develop key life skills, and grow at their own pace.

Our approach is holistic and child-centred—recognising that every child brings unique potential. We start from what they know, support their curiosity, and create space for them to thrive emotionally, socially, and intellectually.

Early learning here isn’t just preparation for the future—it’s a vital and enriching part of life itself.

The curriculum is planned to be:

  • active - based on hands on involvement.
  • personally meaningful - what children are interested in.
  • experiential - learning by doing.
  • exploratory - curiosity as a key motivator.
  • developmentally appropriate - matching age and stage.
  • social - stressing co-operation.
  • creative - using invention and imagination.
  • process-orientated - help given in appropriate stages.
  • integrated - holistic approach to learning.
  • rigorous - stressing the children's responsibility.

Through this, children develop a sense of self-worth and an ability to put that alongside a sense of others.

We encourage a 'sense of others' in all aspects of life and remind all the children of how they are 'role models' for each other. As adults, we have an even greater responsibility to 'set a good example' and therefore we encourage the children to listen as well as talk.

We feel very strongly that the partnership and communication with parents should be an open and honest one, built on mutual trust and respect. The children are closely monitored, and we hold parent consultations/evenings regularly during the year, however if the need arises we will make appointments to meet with parents at other times. An annual written report is given at the end of each academic year.
